Obtaining References Policy
This Obtaining References Policy has been designed to support full compliance with the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015, the associated Children’s Homes Quality Standards, and safer recruitment requirements.
The policy provides clear, practical guidance for managers and recruitment staff on obtaining, verifying and assessing references as part of a robust safer recruitment process. It outlines the number and type of references required, procedures for follow-up and verification, and actions to be taken where references are missing, delayed or raise concerns. The policy emphasises safeguarding, due diligence, accurate record-keeping and the importance of ensuring that all staff are suitable to work with children and young people.
These documents are guidance only and must be adapted to reflect each home’s individual practices. Providers are responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance with legislation, regulations, and Ofsted expectations.
